Fire Extinguisher Servicing in Galway

ADS Group supplies, services and certifies fire extinguishers, hose reels and fire blankets across Galway city and county to I.S. 291, with an annual basic service by a competent person and extended service at the intervals the standard sets. In hospitality and student accommodation the recurring problems are kitchen cover and units that go missing between services.

What matters for Galway buildings

Kitchens need wet chemical, not foam

Cooking oils and fats need a wet chemical extinguisher. Using water or standard foam on a fat fire can spread it violently. Commercial kitchens with only water or foam cover are one of the most common findings we raise, and the fix is cheap relative to the consequence.

Shared residential buildings lose units

In student accommodation and shared premises extinguishers get moved, discharged for amusement or taken. The annual service finds that, which is also why the interval between services is a real risk window and why a visible log by each unit helps.

Coastal and exposed locations corrode units

Salt air attacks the cylinder, the bracket and the pin on externally sited or semi-exposed units. Those are inspected for corrosion rather than only for pressure and date.

What the visit includes

  • Annual basic service of every extinguisher to I.S. 291, each unit labelled and logged
  • Kitchen cover assessed specifically, including wet chemical where cooking oils are present
  • Missing, discharged or relocated units identified and reported
  • Corrosion checked on externally sited and exposed units
  • Hose reels, fire blankets and signage checked at the same visit
  • Certification on completion, scheduled with your alarm and emergency lighting service

Full detail on the system types, the standards and the certification process is on the Fire Fighting Equipment page, and everything else we cover in the county is on the Galway page.

Frequently asked questions

What extinguisher does a commercial kitchen need?
A wet chemical unit for cooking oils and fats. Water and standard foam can spread a fat fire rather than put it out, so a kitchen with only those is a finding we raise in writing.
Extinguishers keep going missing in our building. What can we do?
Document it at each service so the pattern is visible, and consider tamper indicators and more visible siting. We report missing, discharged and relocated units at every visit.
Do extinguishers need replacing at some point, or just servicing?
Both. Annual basic service, an extended service at the interval set for the type, and eventual replacement. The service label on each unit records where it is in that cycle.
